Riccardo Genovese, Montiglio 1931

About the instrument:

Riccardo Genovese was born on 22 June 1883 in Montiglio; he died on 27 July 1935. Genovese led two careers; one as a musician/violin maker, the other as a mattress maker. An official document dated 7th April 1921, where he appears as a witness to the second wedding of Fagnola, has him listed as a violinist; by 1922, he styles himself liutista.

This is a copy of Pressenda but in the Fagnola style. Untouched ‘Turin Red’ varnish is slightly crazed in parts. The making is full of character and quite unmistakably of the Turin School.

The violin back, length 358mm, is in two pieces of quarter-sawn maple with a strong curl of narrow-medium width; the ribs, scroll and neck of similar wood. The front is of fine grain spruce and the varnish of a red-brown colour.

Certificate from Eric Blot, Cremona: “This violin […] is a characteristic example of the work of this Italian luthier in this period.”
