Our three-storey violin shop, which dates from 1820, offers customers fitting surroundings in which to view and try out instruments of all eras.

What can I expect when I visit Tim Toft Violins?

We are a long- standing, family business and we try to make everyone welcome from the absolute beginner to the seasoned professional. You will always get personal attention which will draw on playing, appraisal and repairing expertise. If you are with us for a while you’ll probably get coffee and biscuits as well!

What instruments will I find at the violin shop?

We sell violins, violas, cellos, double basses and bows. We cover the whole range of prices from beginner outfits to professional, soloist level instruments.

Can I try an instrument at the shop; do you have a dedicated space for this?

We would encourage everyone to try a number of instruments before making any decision. There are three separate trying-out rooms as well as a repair workshop available, to make adjustments as required. The building, which is of late Georgian origin, has, in the past, been a solicitor’s office and before that a draper’s shop. It consists of four-storeys, giving us lots of space. There are toilets and, if disabled access is required, we suggest you let us know in advance and a member of staff will be assigned to you. We will ensure the ground floor trying-out room is booked for your visit.

Appointments are always a good idea, particularly if you want to an appraisal/valuation, or are looking for a higher-end instrument or bow. We can book trying-out rooms for you in advance if you expect to be here for a while.
