W.E. Hill & Sons Panormo copy violin bow.

A bow from W.E. Hill & Sons after the model of the Louis Panormo workshop c.1830 displaying the typical heavy chamfers down the front of the head.

It follows the original model by not having a metal underslide between the frog and the stick. The stick itself is of exceptionally fine figured pernambuco and has ‘through’ flats running to the end of the handle indicating a date of production between 1911-c.1927. The bow is also unusual in having a double layered head plate of ivory and ebony (there are no maker identification marks or numbers) and a three-piece adjuster with a pearl eye in each facet. It bears the full W.E. Hill & Sons brand.

According to the Retford Centenary Exhibition Catalogue only six Panormo copy bows were made – all the work of William Johnston. It is a very rare bow of exceptional quality and the latest addition to the Toft Hill Bow Collection.
