Eugenio Degani (1842-1901) was born near Montagnana and trained with his father, Domenico, before setting up there in 1867.
Giulio (1875-1959) worked with his father, Eugenio, and took over the family’s Venice workshop in 1901. He immigrated to the USA in 1915.
This beautiful example by Giulio has a label, ‘Giulio di Eugenio Degani’ … ‘Anno 1902 fece in Venezia’. It shows Giulio at his best, honouring his father’s memory by determinedly upholding Eugenio’s tradition of fine craftsmanship and artistically mannered style, and using the same high quality materials and characteristic varnish. Perhaps no other makers so successfully navigated the boundaries of tradition and fin de siècle aesthetics.
