Jay Haide à l’ancienne Quenoil Model

About the bass

The Jay Haide à l’ancienne Quenoil model double bass is modelled on the instruments of the French bass maker Charles Quenoil. These basses are an excellent choice for both orchestral and jazz players, enriching and complimenting the player’s artistic style. This 3/4 bass has a orange-red varnish on a golden ground, antiqued to give each instrument the patina of age. They are hand crafted with selected maple and spruce with tone quality and workmanship normally found in instruments costing much more.

Professionally set up with Spirocore or Belcanto strings, a high quality bridge and ebony fittings.

Also available in “Panormo” and “German” models.

How does it sound?

A fantastic modern instrument with full rich tone.

About Jay Haide

“Since its introduction over fifteen years ago, the à l’ancienne violins, violas, cellos and basses have become the flagship of the Jay Haide fleet. They are envied and copied by other makers, but as much as they have tried, none have come close to equaling them. Some have gone so far as to put facsimile labels of well known French and Italian makers in our instruments and selling them at much inflated prices. One of our ancienne violins even was given a certificate of authenticity from a well-known expert as an early 20th. century Italian violin with an insurance appraisal for $26,000.00! Because of this, every one of the à l’ancienne violin, viola, cello and bass now has a series of brands inside and out to deter the copyists.

The latest reproduction in the distinguished Jay Haide à l’ancienne series of fine violins is a copy of a fine Tommaso Balestrieri from the Ifshin Collection. In this marvelous reproduction we have endeavored to copy every feature and nuance of the original, from the characteristic f-holes to the arching, scroll and even the wear patterns of the varnish. Tommaso Balestrieri worked from about 1720 to 1772 in both Cremona and Mantua and is considered one of the finest Italian makers of the Golden Era.” – Jay Haide
