About the instrument:
A Charles Jean Baptiste Collin-Mezin violin made in Paris, 1887. Originally from Mirecourt, Charles J.B. Collin-Mezin established himself in Paris and became one of the leading French makers of the 19th century. He was awarded gold and silver medals at the Paris Exhibitions in 1878, 1889 & 1900.
Charles J.B. Collin-Mezin was a prolific maker, he produced a wide range of instruments, including violins, violas, cellos, basses, and bows.
The violin back, length 359mm, is in one piece of quarter-sawn maple with a strong curl of fine-medium width; the ribs, scroll and neck of similar wood. The front is of medium grain spruce which broadens towards the flanks and the varnish of a golden-brown colour.
