Camillo Camilli, Mantua 1739

About the instrument:

Camillo Camilli is widely regarded as one of the finest Mantuan School makers of the 18th century. He moved south, finally settling in the outskirts of Mantua, and from 1731-2 entered into some form of business arrangement with Antonio Zanotti. On Zanotti’s death in 1734 Camilli became the only professional violin maker in Mantua until the 1750s.

The violin back, length 351mm, is in one piece of semi slab-cut maple with a faint curl; the ribs, scroll and neck of similar wood. The front is of fine-medium grain spruce and the varnish of a golden-brown colour.

Certificate from John & Arthur Beare, London: “This violin is a good characteristic example of the maker’s work…”
