The Makers
Dante and Alfredo Guastalla
Dante (1893-1971) Alfredo (1898-1982)
Dante and Alfredo Guastalla were born in Reggio Emilia.
They both spent time in Stefano Scarampella’s workshop and his fluent, if at times rather rough, workmanship is also evident in their work. Their instruments are often dated – quite precisely to the day – on their labels, as in our examples. They worked individually as well as jointly and employed a number of models including Stradivari, Guarneri, Balestrieri, Scarampella and their own model. Their violins have a good reputation for sound and are robustly made.
