About the instrument:
A French violin from the Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy (J.T.L) workshop in Mirecourt with two labels inside first label ‘Jérôme THIBOUVILLE-LAMY & Cie 68-68 bis, Rue Réaumur – PARIS Anno 1898’ and the second label ‘BUTHOD, LUTHIER, Elève du St. VUILLAUME, A PARIS’ .
Charles Buthod (1810-1889) was one of the founding members of the J.T.L Company. Some of their better violins made made in the J.T.L workshop had a Buthod label inside.
The violin back, length 360mm, is in one piece of quarter-sawn maple with a strong curl of narrow width; the ribs, scroll and neck of similar wood. The front is of medium grain spruce and the varnish of an orange-brown colour.
How does it sound?
A bright sound with a clear tone which is balanced across all strings.
