The Makers
William George Geary
William George Geary was born in Hackney, London at the end of the 19th century and was active in the first half of the 20th century.
He entered trade as a lithographer but had a keen interest in violin making, which he studied with W.B. Prince. His instruments, based on Stradivari and Guarneri models, exhibit a high level of technical competence and wood of attractive appearance.
In bow making his instructor was Lewis Thomas Chappell, a pupil of James Tubbs. His abilities here are even more in evidence. His branded bows, though rarely found, are very much of the Tubbs school and combine fine workmanship with excellent playing qualities.
The fine example shown here represents a rare opportunity for the discerning collector or professional player.
