Jacques Pierre Thibout No.8, Paris 1829
About the instrument:
Jacques-Pierre Thibout was born on the 15th of September 1779 in Caen and died on the 4th of December 1856 in Val-de-Marne. He worked in Paris under Jean Gabriel Koliker.
Thibout set up his own account in 1807 at 24 rue Montmartre and, in 1810, moved to 8 rue Rameau. The workmanship and varnish in his best examples bear comparison with any French maker of the period.
He was awarded several medals for violin making in his lifetime: the 1827 silver medal Paris Exposition, the 1844 silver medal Paris Exposition and, most notably, a first-class medal at the 1855 Paris Exposition.
He was appointed maker to the Paris Opera, the Paris Conservatoire, and the Royal Court of Louis-Philippe. Later in life, he was assisted by his son, Gabriel Eugène Thibout.
This example of Jacques-Pierre Thibout’s work we have in stock dates from 1829 and exhibits all his considerable talent. The sound is noble, full and rich. The quality of a Lupot is at a fraction of the price!
The violin back, length 358mm, is in one piece of quarter-sawn maple with a strong curl of medium width; the ribs, scroll and neck of similar wood. The front is of fine grain spruce and the varnish of a deep red colour on a golden ground.
