Paul Bailly No. 764, Paris 1892
About the instrument:
A French violin by Paul Bailly 1892 made in Paris and numbered 764, bearing the label ‘Ten Medals – Gold, Silver & Bronze Paul Bailly, Violin Maker Pupil of Jean Baptise Vuillaume 86 Wardour Street London. W. No.764’.
Paul Bailly was born in Mattaincourt 1844 and studied with Jules Gaillard before working in Brussels for Nicolas François Vuillaume, and in Paris for his brother J.B. Vuillaume. Following his period in the Vuillaume workshop, Bailly travelled a fair amount, working in England and America before settling permanently in Paris from 1898.
The violin back, length 357mm, is in two piece of quarter-sawn maple with a strong curl of medium width; the ribs and scroll of similar wood. The front is of medium spruce which broadens towards the flanks and the varnish of a red-brown colour on a golden ground.
