François Xavier Tourte c.1825

An exceptional example of a violin bow made by François Xavier Tourte, c.1825, during his ‘Golden Period’. François Tourte, also know as Tourte ‘le jeune”, started work as a clock maker in 1760 and began making bows around 1774. This bow is featured in the book L’Archet Volume 1 number 37.

François Tourte raised bow making to a new technical and artistic level, which, while it may have been equalled, has never been surpassed. Some new innovations have been developed, and other models created, yet the François Tourte’s bow remains the obligatory reference, and the standard for bowmakers of the present and the future. This is why all of his work is so highly sought after in the musical world by the greatest professional performers, and all knowledgeable collectors. – L’Archet Volume 1
